What Modern Television Programming Communicates Essay
What Modern Television Programming Communicates Essay Free Online Research Papers What Modern Television Programming Communicates Essay Since its first appearance in the 1950ââ¬â¢s, television has revealed itself to be one of the worldââ¬â¢s most influential mediums. Its entrance into the media scene has tossed other mediums, such as the radio and print media, aside. With at least one television per household in Canada and with the average Canadian watching about 22.6 hours of TV per week, families are absorbing a great deal of television content; which includes the good and the bad. However, with the current selection of television programs, they are more likely to be seeing more of the bad than the good. In addition, kids more likely to spend more time in front of the TV because of their need to be entertained and occupied. This increased exposure of children, coupled with their level of intellect, leaves them far more vulnerable to the influences of television. A lot of the television programs that specifically target children are permeated with violence. Moreover, the violence is made to seem natural and acceptable; in other words, itââ¬â¢s all in the name of fun and no one will get hurt. Take for example ââ¬Å"The Bugs Bunny and Tweety Showâ⬠with the Roadrunner and the Coyote. The Coyote is forever setting up traps for the Roadrunner which always backfire and send him off a cliff with a boulder close behind or falling victim to his own dynamite traps. Regardless of deadliness of the trick that backfires on the Coyote he still survives to plan yet another attack on the Roadrunner. The contraptions used by the Coyote are endless and so is the violence that results from them. Furthermore, these shows have a tendency to depict the world as being good versus evil. This depiction is not only dangerous because it is unrealistic, but also because it suggests that the only way to resolve differences with others is with the use of force. For example, the cartoon ââ¬Å"X-menâ⬠tells the story of mutant humans trying to find their place amongst regular humans. The problem is that some mutants want to wipe out the normal human race, while the X-men are a group of mutants trying to exist as normal people do. In order to protect themselves and normal humans from the evil mutants, they use their special ââ¬Å"mutant powersâ⬠to engage in an ongoing bitter battle, where the one with most powerful mutant defences comes out victorious. And, hence, the battle between good and evil continues and only the strong will survive. Unlike mature adults, young childrenââ¬â¢s ability to pass rational judgement is not yet fully developed; therefore, they are incapable of seeing that, unlike a mere window, television is able change the view it presents. With the use of sound effects, computer enhancements, and other special effect techniques television is able to convey any image it wants to portray. These effects are often used to create grandeur images that incorporate a sense of realism in fictional programs. The effectiveness of these techniques prevents children from being able to distinguish between what is real and what is only the special effects of television. In addition, the variety of special effects employed by producers downplays the violence, immorality, and deformities in human behaviour- the audience is made to feel empathy for the murderer and is able to justify the immorality of the abused child who murders his parents. For example, music is often used by producers of television programs to elicit a particular type of emotion toward a specific character at a specific time. Music is used to produce feelings of suspense, horror, sadness, joy, mysticism, et cetera. The use of sound and music coupled with other special effect techniques, such as lighting and computer enhancements, greatly add to the intensity of the emotions felt by the viewer. A good example of this are Walt Disney movies, like Snow White, Cindrella, Beauty and the Beast, etc., which tend to use a variety of sounds to elicit horror and sadness in young viewers. Furthermore, these special effects may add to the adverse effects of television by blurring the line between reality and the imaginative works of producers. For example, Prove influence of repeated exposure. How does repeated exposure to shows such as the X-men, Bugs Bunny, etc. adversely affect children? Why does this occur- children eager to learn, young minds are like sponges? Parents are ultimately responsible for monitoring what their children watch. We cannot simply leave it up to film-makers and producers and the rating system to protect our children from TV violence. Although third parties do share in the overall responsibility, there main goal is profit, not the protection of young minds. It does so in a very subtle and convincing manner. There is obviously great cause for alarming. Children in general seem to be able to absorb much more than adults can. Furthermore, how can such a this paper addresses the fact that children first and foremost are seeing things they should not be seeing. the violence portrays on TV whether it is trough cartoons or movies is definitely not inoffensive. And furthermore, how could such a massive doses of TV fail to have an effect on people? For most people, television is their window to the world. They believe that the view it offers, is in fact a clear picture of what the real world is. If we were to borough this expression ââ¬Å"the mass media are our window on the world,â⬠It is with children, though that the subject of violent television becomes more alarming. Because adults are rational beings, some may be able to perceive the influence of violent acts on Television and in movies and withdrew. This moves us to formulate that by large, whatever violent programming may do to adults, it can surely do to children. Only more so since the latter are more likely to believe in the fantasy worlds they see on TV. Kids in general spend more time in front of the TV set than adults. Also, unlike rational adults, kids and adolescents with their undeveloped minds are simply unable to see that unlike a mere window, television is able to change the view it presents. However, the film makers and television programmers have ignored this fact. It is well-taken that television in general can have great impact on its viewers. Watching a coca cola commercial can make one thirsty. Watching a sad movie makes the romantic ones cry. The story-line respectively casts bad people as robots, while the good people vanquish them with violence. The child learns that justice, reason and effective communication do not achieve success; but the weapon is a tool of power that is necessary to deal with evil. Teaches children that the world is divided into ââ¬Å"goodiesâ⬠and ââ¬Å"baddies.â⬠Also learn that crime is fun and exciting. Violence is the only way to resolve conflicts. As social critic Michael Novak puts it best: ââ¬Å"Television is a moulder of the soulâ⬠The critics have are stills debating whether violent acts committed on television shows including shows and cartons that are geared to children have long lasting effects on children. In spite of this accumulated evidence, broadcasters and scientists continue to debate the link between the viewing TV violence and childrens aggressive behaviour. Some broadcasters believe that there is not enough evidence to prove that TV violence is harmful. But scientists who have studied this issue say that there is a link between TV violence and aggression, and in 1992, the American Psychological Associations Task Force on Television and Society published a report that confirms this view. The report, entitled Big World, Small Screen: The Role of Television in American Society, shows that the harmful effects of TV violence do exist. Ultimately however, it is up to sensible parents to establish the filtering and to act as ââ¬Å"gatekeepersâ⬠as to what is appropriate or inappropriate for their youngsters to absorb. Actions affecting an individual especially the young mind may have far-reaching implications that we donââ¬â¢t currently understand. Many died of lung cancer causing by heavy smoking before the truth about cigarette was finally known. While the researchers are still slow to admit there is a direct link â⬠¦effect of TV violence are still the topic TV shows producers and film-makers out of their greed and crave to make profits will continue to throw at us all sorts of violent acts. We simply cannot go back to the good old days where it would be scandalous to show a â⬠¦ the world has gone from bad to worse and will continue to advance in the same direction. Unlike a mere window that cannot changes the views it present, television is a powerful mean of intense pressure that convinces that convinces the immature mind that violence is an acceptable way of life. Some may still be in doubt that television violence has harmful effects. However, it cannot be an issue with regard to its presence in children programs. First and foremost, children see things they should not be seeing. Rather than having Hollywood judge the content of what is appropriate for children to view, parents should be more aware of the situation and put restrictions on what their youngsters are watching. The V-chip alone cannot solve the problems. I personally think that it is more insulting than anything. It is like saying to people, hey, we have gone to far to do anything about it. Business is good, we are making tones of profits. We are going to continue in the same line. Just like the tobacco companies are looking for a quick fix by promoting healthy smoking, the TV industry is looking for a quick fix by introducing the V-chip. What factors determine the moral dev. Of a child who moves into adulthood valuing all human beings as equal, respecting the complexities of humans, loving justice, valuing non-violent conflicts. Well over 3000 scientific studies during decades of research have backed up the conclusion that violent TV has negative effects on children and teenagers. Such reputable organizations as the American academy of Paediatricsââ¬â¢, the National Institute of Mental Health all agree that television violence causes aggressive and antisocial Behaviour in children. Recently we have seen the tragedy of teens killing teens in high schools first in the United States and then here in Canada. These shocking events have necessarily led us to ask how and why such terrible things can happen. The average American child watches 27 hours of television a week just had a very disturbing conversation with my friend and neighbour whose son plays with mine on an almost daily basis. She asked me if Id noticed my three-year-old acting differently lately and with surprise I answered yes. My normally sweet, co-operative boy was suddenly stealing chopsticks from my drawers and using them as swords and bows and arrows. He was taking the plastic knob off his playmates golf club and using the stick as a sword or holding it up as a gun. He now has an aggressive posture and look on his face. He fought his teacher yesterday because he didnt want to put his coat on. Hes been fighting my husband and I on almost everything in the last three weeks and it has been getting worse, though weve tried many different discipline techniques. So whats been the problem? My friend sat her son down yesterday and told him she was upset with the hitting and general aggressiveness between them when they play lately and asked him why he was hitting my son yesterday. He replied that when the soundtrack for the movie Shrek is on, thats the behaviour Shrek does, so thats what the boys do. In shock, I questioned my son and he gave the same answer. Although we are both finicky moms and watch our children like hawks, read to them often, laugh, hug and love them, feed them healthy food and have a loving family environment as well as having talked to them over and over about how TV is not real our kids have been acting violently. I believe the movie industry has been touting movies as Family, but in the ones Ive seen there are what I consider to be swear words, sexual innuendo, bad grammar and violence, violence, violence. As of today, Im taking Shrek, and any other show I see violence or other inappropriate images in, out of my sons viewing. Weve gotten too slack, too lazy, too helpless, too accepting of Hollywood and the mindless, dysfunctional garbage they hype at us. We must say no to it, and in large numbers if the media is ever going to understand they will actually make more money if they produce movies and shows that are healthy for children to learn from, that parents feel safe allowing them to see. 5. South Park South Park is a violent tv show where a group of kids swear when one of their friends die and usually think of disgusting things to end evil. Although it is violent South Park is very funny. South Park Episode a Sacrilege An episode of South Park aired June 8 on Global TV which depicts a boy acting as Jesus Christ, hanging on a cross, has been labeled a vile, unrestrained attack by the Catholic Civil Rights League and received strong condemnation from American Christian groups. The boyââ¬â¢s friend, whose father has marital problems due to erectile dysfunction, confuses the word resurrection (of Jesus Christ) with the word erection. The confusion occurs when the two boys meet a priest who tells them that Jesus was crucified, died and was resurrected on the third day. Kyle, thinking that a resurrection is the same thing as an erection, wants to help his father, so he asks a third boy, Cartman, to hang on the cross, hoping heââ¬â¢ll have an erection once he dies. Rose Dyson, chairperson of Canadians Concerned About Violence in Entertainment, calls the episode an inexcusable excess in television programming. South Park is an outgrowth of the Beavis and Butthead show banned by the CRTC last year in Canada. It is produced by Comedy Central, a joint venture of Time Warner entertainment Company and Viacom International. Dyson says South Park is even coarser and more violent than Beavis and Butthead. This is a debasement of Christians who take the crucifixion of Jesus seriously, and it is marketed to adolescents. I would put it in the same category as misogyny, anti-Semitism or racism. These are all acts of violence because they harm the offended party through abuse of power, says Dyson, who is publishing a book later this year about violence in the media. Dyson says the content of shows geared to adolescents is alarming and often depicts children in the role of enabling adults, rather than the other way around. The message is given that children must take on far more than theyââ¬â¢re emotionally capable of. The pendulum has swung too far the other way of ââ¬Ëchildren must be seen and not heardââ¬â¢ to ââ¬Ëchildren rule the roost.ââ¬â¢ Thomas Langan, president of the Catholic Civil Rights League, says that attacks on the church by the mainstream media are becoming increasingly outrageous. These attacks are an obvious attempt by one segment of society to stir up loathing and anger at the church. Christians must take action to awaken society at large to the extreme danger this presents to all Canadians. Calls made to Global Television about the episode were not returned. Rugrats and violence Some Russian circus handlers upset several tables as they race outside to chase after a train which several circus monkeys have commandeered and that later crashes in a forest. Dil repeatedly hits Tommy on the head with a rattle (at first by accident, but then seemingly on purpose) and then with his bottle. Stu and Drew get into a brief tussle where Drew ends up pinning Stu to the ground and holding his arm behind him. When Stu exclaims that hes breaking his arm, Drew says, Thats because I cant reach your neck. Spike (the dog) attacks a wolf thats menacing the kids and the two fall from a bridge presumably into the river below. Though children watch TV at just about any time (including programs aimed at adults), the UCLA Television Violence Monitoring Project focuses on Saturday-morning childrens television shows. It is true that people rarely die on Saturday morning TV, but they do fight ââ¬â a lot. The shows send the message that fighting, if not fun, is at least the norm. It is ironic that adult programming is showing promising signs with respect to violence while childrens shows continue to have serious problems. The study classifies violence into three categories: Slapstick, Tame Combat Violence and Sinister Combat Violence Slapstick This is the classic approach to cartoons as exemplified by Bugs Bunny and The Roadrunner. The violence is not designed to be taken seriously by viewers. Some examples: 1. Addams Family (ABC) 2. Animaniacs (Fox) 3. Beethoven (CBS) 4. The Bugs and Tweety Show (ABC) Tame Combat Violence The violence here usually stems from a battle between good and evil. While the tame combat violence is sometimes central to the resolution of the story, it is never the focus. Some examples: 1. Alladin (CBS) 2. Dog City (Fox) 3. Free Willy (ABC) 4. Reboot (ABC) Sinister Combat Violence Shows typified by sinister combat violence raise the most concerns because fighting is the main attraction or focus. This is not a new genre, but the dark overtones and unrelenting combat are signs of a growing trend. These shows are mean-spirited and feature violence for the sake of violence. Their message is: fight! The study found eight shows that fell into this category. 1. Batman and Robin (Fox) 2. The X-Men (Fox) 3. Wild C.A.T.S. (CBS) 4. Skeleton Warriors (CBS) 5. Mega Man (Fox) 6. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (CBS) 7. The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (Fox) 8. Super Samurai Syber Squad (ABC) Series with the most frequent violence: 1. Walker, Texas Ranger (CBS) Virtually every episode features Chuck Norris in prolonged, graphic scenes of hand-to-hand combat. Of 15 monitored shows, 12 raised concerns. 2. Mantis (Fox) The intensity of the violence is less than in Walker, but there are far more violent scenes. This is violence for the sake of violence. Mantis raised concerns 12 out of the 17 times it was watched. 3. The X-Files (Fox) The X-Files always includes several disturbing violent scenes. But the violence is portrayed as evil, and the two protagonists have a strong aversion to violence. The show was examined 34 times and raised concerns 12 times. The Taliban Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
The Taliban - Research Paper Example forces from Afghanistan. (McNamara, Melissa ââ¬Å"The Taliban in Afghanistan) It is important to note that there are two factions of the Taliban existing within countries of Afghanistan and Pakistan. With the Pakistan faction going rogue and, although identifying itself with the Taliban, it actually has a totally different mission and goal than its Afghan counterpart. But in order to understand why the differing goals exist, one must first understand the history of the group. The Taliban can be considered to be religious fanatics who are trying to advance their religious goals and beliefs across the Middle Eastern world. The leader of the Taliban was Mullah Mohammed Omar. A reclusive leader who heads the terrorist group together with 8-10 other colleagues, all of whom are survivors of the Russian war and occupation of Afghanistan in the 1970's. Their governing rules are overseen by the Ministry of Virtue and Vice, often considered to be a religious police force. (McNamara, Melissa à ¢â¬Å"The Taliban in Afghanistanâ⬠). The group originally emerged as one of the mujaheddin or holy warriors in the region. (Hayes, Laura, Brunner, Borgina, and Rowen Beth ââ¬Å"Who Are The Taliban?â⬠) This group has every intention of establishing a radical Sunni Islamic regime in Afghanistan. The Taliban as a group should not be confused with the Taliban Militia that was established in 1994. (McNamara, Melissa ââ¬Å"The Taliban in Afghanistanâ⬠) In Pakistan however, The Taliban Group there has taken on the name ââ¬Å"Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistanâ⬠, a group with known links and ties to the Al Qeada. Although it shares similar ideologies with the Afghan Taliban group, the group is known as a stand alone group with different goals from the original. According to Raza Rumi, director of policy and programs at the Jinnah Institute, the primary target of the group is the Pakistan military. The goal of the group is the removal of the U.S. troops from the area and they w ould like to see the imposition of the Sharia in Pakistan. (Brumfield, Ben ââ¬Å"Who Are The Pakistani Taliban?â⬠). Since the group is a breakaway faction, it lacks the organized structure of the original and is instead a coordinated militia. Due to the radical religious beliefs of the Taliban, they would rather become known as religious terrorists who use the holy war or Jihad to propagate religious war over their perceived enemies. However, nothing could be further from the truth. There is nothing religious about their terrorist activities. The key to their terrorist campaign is the use of violence. (ââ¬Å"Types of Terrorismâ⬠) However, the most common form of terrorism that the Taliban uses can be seen in the way that they need to acquire funding for their terrorist activities. The group has been known to employ the use of roadside bombings in Afghanistan and Pakistan when attacking the U.S. troops stationed there. The group is also not beyond using arson and firebomb ings in order to quash their targets. However, the group, due to the lack of funds through their bank accounts and other channels of receiving financing having been effectively cut off by the international community, has taken to kidnapping and hostage taking for ransom in order to keep their organization afloat and their terror activities

Platos Philosophy Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Platos Philosophy - Essay Example Platoââ¬â¢s philosophy of the world of becoming and the world of being are separate entities, but their explanation sometimes blurs the line between the two, since the philosopher made no effort to separate his ideas completely. The final form of the never-ending need to understand is a form of knowledge in the world of forms introduced by Plato. In the world of forms, the philosopher is known to have attained the highest form of knowledge available, and can therefore, be able to see the world of ideas in the world immediately. This is the ultimate and possibly, only final form of knowledge that a philosopher would seek. From Platoââ¬â¢s philosophy, we can be made to understand that for the faculty of reason described above, one that transcends real world boundaries, there must be a corresponding level of universal reality. These two different factors are divided into what Plato called the world of becoming and the world of being. In the world of becoming, the forms do not change eternally and have non-objective characteristics like beauty and justice. Conversely, the world of being depicts that the beautiful forms seen in everyday life are infinite copies of the forms described above. Plato considered that objects have the ability to acquire and/or lose beauty, but the essence of beauty is such that it has a distinct existence from the objects in the world. Plato insists that the physical objects seen the world are actually perfect copies of the world of forms or Triangle. ... In contrast, the physical world, the world known by the human senses, is a dynamic world, a world of becoming. Plato then states that the forms have an infinite and singular existence in the world of being, as contrasted to the world of becoming. Platoââ¬â¢s explanation of the forms indicates that our souls were indicated with the forms before the bodies, and the mind realizes the forms in different ways.4 The first way of recognizing the forms is through recollection, where it is understood the soul was acquainted with the forms before the body. In this case, an individual can recollect the knowledge of the soul prior to the existence of the body. In this case, the existence of physical objects is just but a reminder of the beautiful essences of the forms, and education is a way of remembering the forms that existed before the body. The second way of realizing the forms is through speech and dialect, where an individual learns to separate objects and discover how the various spli ts of knowledge are related. The third way of discovering the world of being or the forms, is through the power of love. In the symposium, Plato states that the power of love leads an individual from a beautiful object, to a beautiful thought and finally to the discovery of the essence of beauty itself. Platoââ¬â¢s two distinct ideas, the world of being and the world of becoming, can be explained using different parables or metaphors that he postulated.5 The first metaphor, the allegory of the cave, is an embracement of two allegories and describes both forms of becoming and being. The allegory asks us to imagine ourselves as prisoners in an underground prison, where we are chained without access to the outside. In the

Moving and positioning an individual in healthcare
Moving and positioning an individual in healthcare Meaning and definition: Moving and handling is defined as any activity that connects pushing, pulling, carrying, lifting or moving where the above activities place people at danger and must not be carried out without thought and awareness to organizational policies and procedures. Moving and positioning is a significant area in health and social care as there are hundreds of injuries every year as a result of accidents acquired when we move people where an accident may cause serious injury to the individual being moved and have long term effects on the care worker carrying out the move, which may consequence in disability and pain for the rest of our lives. We should remember that injury can also be acquires as a result of not moving a non-living object properly (nvqresources.com). Elements of competence HSC360a prepare the equipment, the environment and the individual for moving and positioning: Before we carry out any activity at work that involves moving and handling we must be trained, to carry out the moves and also to ensure we have sufficient knowledge of our own body to work. Safely moving and handling incidents occur as a result of lack of awareness, slippery floors, lack of preparation, faulty equipment, lack of co-operation from the individual, poorly trained and ill prepared staff Health and safety measures( ) Health and safety measures: All features of health and safety are enclosed by legislation. Legislation of moving and handling: The legislation is based on the idea that the prevention of accidents or injury depends on the understanding of the risk factors in a particular work situation. The more traditional approach of attempting to prevent back pain by instructing people in the basic principles of how to lift is not sufficient. The relevant legislation covering moving and handling, equipment and risk assessment can be summarized as Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992, Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare Regulations) 1992, the provision and use of Workplace Equipment Regulations 1998, and the Lifting Operation and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998(Cheshire East Council, 2009). We know that moving people safely is no exception. Health and Safety at Work Act, 1974: This legislation sets out the general duties which employers have towards employees and members of the public, and employees have to themselves and to each other where the act explains that employers should have to make sure as far as rationally workable, the health, safety and welfare of their employees when employees are at work and any other persons will be affected by their business activities (HSE leaflet, 1996). Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1992: This regulation was refined the act 1974 where Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1992 need employers to carry out risk assessments, recording the significant findings. Furthermore, Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1992 also compels employers to make arrangements for implementing the health and safety measures identified as necessary by the risk assessment, appoint competent people (often themselves or company colleagues) to help them to implement the arrangements, set up emergency procedures provide clear information and training to employees, and work together with other employers sharing the same workplace (HSE leaflet, 1996). Manual Handling Operations Regulations (MHOR), 1992: MHOR (1992) taken into practice on 1st January 1993 to implement European Directive 90/269/EEC and has added to the duties on employers by the Health and Safety at Work Act (1974). On the other hand, MHOR needs a risk assessment approach which takes into account whether it is rationally practicable to mechanize the process where the employers are compelled to provide equipment to keep away from the hazardous manual handling of loads. And these regulations apply wherever things or people are moved by hand or bodily force. On the other hand, the responsibility for implementing safety requirements tends to fall on personnel directly responsible for the co-ordination and supervision of work (McGuire, et.al, 1997; Nelson, Baptiste, 2006). The Regulations impose duties on employers, self-employed people and employees where employers must avoid all hazardous manual handling activity where it is reasonably practicable to do so. If it is no t, they must assess the risks in relation to the nature of the task, the load, the working environment and the capabilities of the handler and take appropriate action to reduce the risk to the lowest level reasonably practicable. Employees must follow appropriate work systems introduced by their employer to promote safety during moving and handling. Ensuring safety for ourselves, our colleagues and the person being moved is the combined responsibility of our and our employer. The health and safety environment supplies guidelines about weights which can be safely lifted which are very general guides and are not a substitute for a risk assessment, because many factors can affect the risks in each situation of residents. Factors that can affect the risk are summarized as the height of the bed and hoist, the ability of the individual to assist, the environment, the amount of room to maneuver, and the skill and experience of the staff member (Nolan, et.al, 2008). Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER) 1998: LOLER was taken into practice on 5 December 1998 which intends to reduce risks to health and safety from lifting equipment provided for use at work. LOLER requires that equipment has to be strong and stable enough for the intended load, marked to indicate safe working load, used safely: the equipments use should be organized, planned and executed by competent people and subject to ongoing examination and inspection by competent people. LOLER (1998) covers Hoists, slings and bath hoists where the regulations state that lifting equipment has to be carefully examined by capable people at least every six months in the case of equipment used to lift people, and at least yearly in the case of other tools(Health and Safety Executive, 1998), Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER) 1998: Provision and use of work Equipment regulations (1998) is a detailed regulation covering lifting equipment which should be suitable for its intended use, safe to use and appropriately maintained and inspected to ensure it remains safe to use, accompanied by appropriate safety measures such as warnings and markings, and used only by people who have received adequate information, instruction and training (Health and Safety Executive, 1998), The Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations (1995): This regulation compels the employers to report major injuries, dangerous occurrences and diseases. If there is an accident connected with work including an act of physical violence and employee, or a self-employed person working on premises, suffers an over-three-day injury it must send a completed accident report form (F2508) to the enforcing authority within ten days. An over-three-day injury is one which is not major but results in the injured person being away from work or unable to do their normal work for more than three days. On the other hand, if an employee suffered a moving and handling injury that resulted in inability to do her/his usual work for more than three days, the employer would be obliged to report. For example, a care assistant suffers a back injury when lifting a heavy load and is unable to work for four days. Major injures are fracture other than to fingers, thumbs or toes, ampu tation, and dislocation of the shoulder, hip, knee or spine and the dangerous occurrences covers collapse, and overturning or failure of load-bearing parts of lifts and lifting equipment(Health and Safety Executive, 1999; Health and Safety Executive, 2001). Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations (1999): Regulations (1992) were cancelled and replaced with the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 that re-enacted the provisions of the 1992 regulations and merged modification made to the 1992 regulations. Regulations also cancel the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1994. This regulations was taken into practice on 29 December 1999 and include implement principles of prevention in regulations rather than through an Approved Code of Practice, clarify that employers should use capable employees in preference to external sources for competent advice and assistance on health and safety, include a specific requirement to arrange necessary contacts with emergency services regarding first aid, emergency medical care and rescue and designate workers to implement fire fire-fighting procedures, and make it explicit that it is not a defense for employers to claim that they were unable to meet their ob ligations because of any act or default by employees or competent persons(HSE Press Release C058:99, 1999). Views, preferences, and choice of residents: We must develop and maintain the relationship that promotes views, preference and need of individual. The people I work with are old and having dementia and they have a right to choose the way they are cared for. I should always let them be as independent as possible according to their condition. I support individual to communicate their views and preference in according to their need and priorities. I help and support resident as individual and with respect and dignity. For example: What time they wish to get up and have their meals? What they want to wear? What they wish to do during the day? Whether they want to stay in their room or wish to go to the lounge? I encourage the individual to take as much responsibilities themselves if they are able and it is possible (Burrbidges, et.al 2003). The beliefs and preferences of an individual affect the way of moving and positioning the residents. We should find out their likes and preference and should not force them whatever they do not like. For example, clients from cultural backgrounds like, Middle Eastern and some Asian cultures may not wish to be moved, touched, or seen unclothed by healthcare professionals of the opposite sex where some Asian cultures wish to be involved in care to the point that they may watch over the patient around the clock, taking shifts, and they might wish to do the turning. On the other hand, some people simply favor not to be moved due to shyness. However, patients must be turned one way or another because of the safety risks posed to skin integrity, formation of contractures which limit range of motion and mobility (Burridges, et.al 2003). Role of career to encourage independency to residents: We should provide active support to encourage an individual to participate and manage their own work .The dignity, and privacy of an individual must be respected all the times which help to maintain their self esteem and sense of well being. Environment and equipments before moving and handling individual When I have to move the person then I should be careful and I must explain the person before assist them, what is going to happen and try as much as possible to keep away from lifting altogether, trying rather to roll, to slide or to turn the person. The use of simple and fairly inexpensive aids will eliminate the need lifting or heavy handling. Moving and handling has special rules: I need to make sure that I have enough space to move smoothly and freely. Move any obstructions for space to move, place my feet comfortably apart so that I have a firm base. Always stand as close as possible to the person to be moved, bend at the knees so that I can use the strong leg muscles, do not bend or twist at the waist. Try to maintain the S shape of My spine to help to reduce the strain on my back ( www.paupdate.org/moving ). Infection controls: Meaning: Infection control is an important part of an effective risk management program to improve the quality of residential care and the occupational health of staff. Hygiene is very important factor to prevent cross infection as we always work closely with the residents (Infection, 2004). The infection that spread from one person to another is called cross infection which is very essential to control in a care home. It is very important to take standard precaution to minimize the risk of cross infection. We must wear gloves as it act as a protective barrier against infection. Hand washing should be done :before and after performing any procedure, after contact with any body fluid, soiled linen or clinical waste ,before starting and after finishing work, after eating, after using the toilet, after coughing, sneezing, or blowing our nose, We should wear protective clothing as it helps to reduce the spread of infection by preventing infection getting on our clothes and spreading to the next person we come into contact with. We should tie up our hair because it may disturb our visible path to handle our residents, may entangled in equipment which may cause a serious injury as well as may come into contact with the individuals that can spread infection. Clinical instruments, syringe bottles gloves, aprons, needle, glass should be dispose in yellow sharp container or bag. It is very important to clean all the equipments after using each resident because infections can breakthrough one person to another person on instrument, equipments and linen. Waste should be disposed properly in the right place. Clinical waste has to be thrown in yellow bag/bin soiled linen should be collected in a red bag for the laundry. Recyclable instruments and equipments should be disposed in the blue bin (Nolan, 2005). Health and safety measures: Individual care plan: A nursing care plan can be defined as a set of actions the nurse/health care personal will implement to resolve nursing problems identified by assessment where the creation of the plan is an intermediate stage of the nursing process (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/nursing care plan). The care plan contains information about persons day to day care .It should give details of any assistance required to wash or bath it may include using a bath hoist .It will also include the persons preference, for example if the person prefers to bath or shower. It should give details of the persons mobility. If the person uses a frame to walk this should be recorded. If a person requires walking aid and the help of one or two members of staff to walk, this has to be recorded in the care plan (Nazarko 2000). Model of care plan and its reflection to my work: Assessment Data Nursing Diagnosis Goals Nursing interventions Expected Outcomes Immediate risk to individual: Meaning and importance of communication in moving and handling individuals: Communication can be defined as a dynamic process in which people attempt to share their internal states with other people through the use of different symbols (McDaniel, et.al, 2009). Any decision that we make is only as good as the information it is best on. Communication is vitally important to the quality of care. Staff needs to communicate effectively if they are to give the best possible care. As a care assistant, we have to work closely with residents where residents may express their condition with us. For example, a resident may say he/she is finding difficult walk around because the pain in her/his knees is so bad and the tablets which she/he is having is not working. This is significant information which we have to report our nurse, because effective communication leads to the residents receiving effective treatment to control pain and improve mobility. As I m working with vulnerable and old peopl e, they are dependable on care staff working in the home .Therefore we have a duty to act in a professional way and protect the confidentiality of information that achieve during their care( Heath, and Ford, 1996). Risk assessment: Meaning of risk assessment: Risk assessment is the most important factor to decide what a hazard in the workplace is. It is clear that precautions should be put into place so that the risk is minimized with altogether when the risk is determined to be significant enough. In other words, It is a legal requirement to avoid manual handling which could increase the risk of injury. Risk assessment is unavoidable therefore the employer must make an assessment; take appropriate measures to remove or reduce the risk of injury; provide information on the load; and review risk assessments (www.paupdate.org/moving). In other words, a risk assessment considers the probability of an incident occurring and the severity of the injury or damage that may occur. The necessary steps are conclude as to look at the hazards, to decide who might be harmed and how, to evaluate the risks and decide whether the existing precautions are adequate or whether more should be done, to record findings, and to review assessment and revise if necessary(www.selworthy.somerset.sch.uk//Moving%20and%20Handling%20Policy.doc). Risk assessment is the most important factor to decide what a hazard in the workplace is. It is clear that precautions should be put into place so that the risk is minimized with altogether when the risk is determined to be significant enough. The first step is to look for hazards: Being a social career, we have to go round of the workplace and check for potential dangers which will minimize the risks towards residents as well as whole team members The second step is to decide who might be harmed and how: We have to decide who might be particularly at risk and how we can remove potential harm to residents as well as ourselves and service users We can summarize the third step that health care assistants must analyze whether there have been sufficient precautions put into place to counter the hazard. The next step is to record findings: On the way of risk assessment, we have to inform to senior staff or nurse in-charge verbally or mention on the record We should always check that the risk assessment has been carried out before we conduct any tasks and then to follow the steps identified in the assessment to reduce the risk (Nolan, 2005). Similarly, risk related with lifting and moving people can be arranged in a systematic, practical way by applying the risk management principles outlined by â⠬à â⠬à identifying the factors likely to cause injury, â⠬à assessing the potential risks to workers and other persons affected by the work, â⠬à implementing control measures to eliminate or reduce the risks, and â⠬à monitoring and review the effectiveness of the control measures( Act worker, 2000). Fact about back injuries: Our back is at work 24 hrs a day which has to hold our entire body and support most of our weight. Most of the injuries involved are sprain and strain caused by poor posture followed by repeated over a long period of time. Our body is like a machine which needs to be cared properly to perform a work without any problem. Therefore we can prevent back injuries by learning the best way to sit stand and lift (http:/www.nvqmadesimple.com/nvq-3/hsc-358-hsc-360). Research finding of Nurse Education in Practice has summarized the poor practice of moving and handling of individuals in Nursing homes are use of bed sheets to drag patients up the bed, non-completion of risk assessments, no assessment of patients abilities, lifting/using condemned techniques, supporting the patients weight, poor communication, poor management of equipment, and non-completion of equipment safety checks (Jones, and Cornish, 2010). Clothing: Research has summarised that the type of clothing a worker wears can hinder the safe moving of clients and has further concluded that clothing should be comfortable and enable freedom of movement and footwear should provide adequate grip and stability. For example, clothing factors which may lead to injury during handling because short or tight skirts which hinder the workers correct feet and hip positioning and high-heeled shoes which prevent stability and balance. On the hand, jewellery or long, untied hair which can be grabbed or pulled by clients being moved (Designing workplaces for the safer handling of patients/residents, 1999). The clothing which we wear during moving and handling is very important because clothing may affect the procedure, and cause injury. Reflection: In my nursing home where I m working, our uniform is comfortable. I wear comfortable trouser, loose tunic top and supportive shoes .I have never faced the problem and hindrances with my uniform during moving and handling. Importance of proper moving and handling individuals correctly: The importance of proper )handling and moving can be summarized that proper moving and handling can minimize the risk of injury where injury harms residents as well as their family members, and work colleagues (www3.hants.gov.uk/proc2206.doc). Risk assessment has two parts where employer and employees. Their roles are inseparable in order to minimize the risk and hazards. The employers duties are summarized to avoid the need for hazardous manual handling as far as is reasonably practicable, to assess the risk of injury from any hazardous manual handling that cant be avoided, to and reduce the risk of injury from hazardous manual handling, as far as reasonably practicable. On the other hand, employees duties and responsibilities are concluded to follow appropriate systems of work laid down for their safety. To make proper use of equipment provided to minimize the risk of injury, to co-operate with the employer on health and safety matters. If a care assistant fails to use a hoist that has been provided, they are putting themselves at risk of injury. The employer is unlikely to be liable, to apply the duties of employers, as appropriate, to their own manual handling activities, and to taking care to ensure that their activities do not put others at risk( ). Various hazards can be summarized as environmental hazards, hazards related to equipments, and hazards related to people where environmental hazards includes slippery floors, messy corridors, rearrange furniture, worn carpet and electrical flexes. On the other hand, hazards related with equipments and materials involves faulty brakes on bed, faulty electrical machines, damaged lifting equipments, incorrectly labeled substances, leaking a damage container, and worn mobility aids. Similarly, hazards connected to people covers handling procedures, visitors to the building, intruder violent and aggressive behavior (Nolan, 2005). Preparing for moving and handling: We have to wash our hand and should wear suitable cloth and footwear. We must check the care plan before starting moving an individual and assess the risk. We must always work in pair. We have to remove the potential hazard and prepare the immediate environment. We should ask the individual the best way of moving how they prefer and assist accordingly. We must explain the procedure in each and every stage even though they are unable to understand We must explain about how the equipment operates. We must check the agreement of the individual we are moving. We should stop immediately if the individual is not willing to continue as we cannot move an individual without his consent (Nolan, 2005). HSC360b Move and position the individual , Method of moving and handling: We should always avoid manual lifting unless it is emergencies or a life threatening situation because there is no weight limit for lifting .It is very important to use the correct equipment according to an individuals need which we can find out checking the care paln. Before performing moving and handling risk assessment must be carried out to avoid the possible harm and injury (Nolan, 2006) Principles of moving and positioning individuals: The principles of moving and handling has summarized as follows. From the first day in practice, we must not put ourselves at risk, never lift alone, find out where all the lifting aids are We have to assess the situation for moving the patient We have to communicate clearly with our resident so that all know what to expect and do. We have to avoid tensing our muscles We have to adopt a stable posture which usually means having our feet about a hip-width apart We have to keep our knees soft or bent We have to keep the load as close as to our body as possible and avoiding stretching We have to avoid twisting or bending sideways (Gilling et.al, 2001). Equipment for moving and handling: There are various types of moving and handling equipment available in medical field such as: hoist, transfer board /sheet, slide boards, turn discs, monkey pole or lifting handle, handling belts, patient hand block etc. The most common used equipments in our nursing home are: different type of hoist (such as standing, oxford, triangle), sliding sheet, transfer belt, before using any equipment we must read the manual hand book and follow the instruction. Hoist: Appropriate hoists and slings have to be used for the residents according to the individual needs. The ridge of the hoist has to be faced outwards and away from the residents to protect from potential injury where we have to place the sling around or under the service users. If we use standing hoist, the sling must be placed around the waist and tighten the belt. To use hoist, theoretical knowledge is not sufficient where practical skills of the workplace is a significant part of using hoist properly. Training provided by the Nursing Home has to be taken by the care worker. If something is confused to use hoist, we have to ask our senior before using it and always work with partners (Nolan, 2006). Call of the Wild :: Free Essay Writer
Call of the Wild I recently read a really good book. It is called Call of the Wild, by Jack London. It has 104 pages and is a fiction book. The Call of the Wild has a very interesting plot. It is centered around a St. Bernard and Scotch Shepard mix, named Buck. At home, which was a large house called Judge Millers Place, in the sun kissed Sanata Clara Valley, he ruled over all dogs. Buck was Judge Miller's inseperable companion, until a man named Manuel, who was the one of the gardener's helpers, commited a treacherous act. Manuel, to cover his Chinese lottery gambling debts, stole Buck from his sound sleep and brought him to a flag station called College Park. There, the exchanging of money took place. It was simple. Manuel needed money to pay off his gambling debts, and Buck was a prime candidate. Buck was loaded onto an express car to Seattle. When he got there, he was bought by two men named Perrault and Francois. He was loaded onto a ship called the Narwhal and tooken to the Yukon, where he was to be trained as a sled dog. There were other sled dogs that Buck came to know well, each with their own unique personality. After only a short time of training, Buck was a sled dog, traveling with the team of huskys and mix breeds from Dyea Beach, to the town of Dawson. After several trips with Perrault and Francois, Buck was traded to a know nothing, gold seeking family. they knew nothing, or hardly nothing, about managing a sled team. There trip began with a very bad start. The family had loaded up their wagon with too much unneded baggage, and it was top heavy. as the dogs began to pull away and pull around a curve, the baggage tipped over along with the sled and thus the unnecessary baggage was discarded, and the trip was barely completed because of harsh weather, inadequate supplies, and poor management skills of the dog handlers. All except a man that went by the name of John Thornton, perhaps the only sane one in the group. After on e of the men repeatedly beat on a dog, Thornton became enraged. He threatened to kill the man, and shortly after, he unhooked the beaten Buck from the sled, the rest of the family left John Thornton.

Essay on Military Leaders in Developing Countries
Military Leaders in Developing Countries The role of the military in any country is one of prestige. Unless having been through it personally, one could not imagine willingly subjecting oneself to the rigorous training received by so many young men and women today. The role played by the military is always to protect, defend, and assist its country in both war and peacetime, but in developing nations there are quite different roles as well. To be a leader in the armed forces, one must be strong both physically and mentally, as well as having a certain charisma, or skill with people. This is true because in order to lead, one must appeal to those he or she is leading. Not only does a developing country have armed forces for defense, butâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Quadaffi had some big fish to fry when he decided to take over Libya but he really had a challenge when it came to keeping the oil of Libya nationalized. This is one of the big reasons why the Libyan people love him. Momar Quadaffi does not see much of the oil money if any at all. He has stayed ever faithful to his country in that the profits from all Libyan oil goes to a fund that builds houses for their citizens. Quadaffi himself does not even own a home but instead has vowed that the last house he will build will be one for his family. This is the sort of leadership that the military creates. When your back is against the proverbial wall and it would be so much easier to quit, you must ask for more. As a young man in boot camp at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, it was told to us several times that the only easy day was yesterday. This brings me to another reason why Momar Quadaffi has been such an agent of change, His relentless pursuit of prosperity for the Libyan people. Quadaffi has been the target of United States media bashes since before the middle eighties. He has been shot at and bombed countless times by countless numbers of people. His young daughter is dead because of an attack on his apartment. This is what makes him a great leader.
